I am going to be proposing to my girlfriend (in a very romantic fashion) later this month. I will be turning 21 a few days before hand so my knowledge of wines is terrible. I know she likes red wine, and sweet or dry I do not know. I would like to keep the price around $50.00 since the night and ring has put me under. So could you please suggest some red wines sweet and dry that would be impressive. I believe she likes merlot, and zinfandel, but from what I have gathered it is much more complex than that. Also if you would be so kind to mention a few good sparkling and desert wine that would be great also. thank you

I'd recommend finding out whether she likes sweet or dry wines, otherwise, we'll be grasping at straws.

Go to a reputable wine store (ask friends, parents, whatever for advice), and ask them for the best Champagne (note the capitol C) that they have for $50.00. Hopefully that will do the trick. Good luck.

the thing is that i live in utah(not many fun people here) and i found only one wine shop in the city i am assuming i can buy some at the state liquor store that is champagne or red wine i found out she likes sweet wine so i would like to hear some suggestions for both red sweet wine and champagne please.

For the Champagne, recommend Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Yellow Label (non-vintage), at about $35 for a 750 ml bottle or about $20 for a 375 ml half-bottle. And tell her the story of the wine: how a young woman of 26 found herself widowed in 1805 by the sudden death of her husband, who had founded a small winery in the Champagne district. She decided to continue the enterprise as the means to support herself, and developed a world-class Champagne house whose wines became the favorite of the Russian royal family. Although now controlled by the French conglomerate Louis Vuitton Moet-Hennessy (LVMH), the Widow ("Veuve") Clicquot's Champagnes are still highly-regarded, especially among the ladies, for their lively effervescence and faintly sweet taste.

I'm counting on the other board members to correct any inaccuracies in my little history lesson.

Congrats, and best wishes, from deep in the heart of Bush Country.

Hi bigbradyb and welcome to the board. Shame on you, " Not many fun people in Utah". Some of the wildest, drunken, longest-lasting parties I`ve been privvy to have been with some of my Jack-Mormon friends in Salt Lake, but that`s another thread. The state liquor stores in Salt Lake ( especially the one on 900E by Oceans Cafe ) carry a wonderful selection of wines and Bubblies. Can`t help much on the sweet red wine as I haven`t had any Annie Green Springs in a while. Try the state store, they have some pretty hip people. winoweenie
