If I want to know the most common selection of ripes for red wines. Which do you tell, are the 5 or 6 most popular varyeties of ripes. I only know Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Rioja.

Hi Sergio, and welcome to the Wine Board. Before everybody climbs up all your's and my backs, I'm sure you meant grapes and not rapes.
In addition to the ones you mentioned, you should include pinot noir, syrah/shiraz, sangiovese, and nebbiolo. Incidentally, Rioja is made from the tempranillo grape. There are some other significant grapes in the Southern Western Hemisphere. They are malbec in Argentina, tannat in Uruguay, and carmenere in Chile (sometimes blended with cabernet and/or merlot.

Hola Sergio! I see your from south of the border. Tell me, do you know if Mexico make any wines I might be able to buy on this side. If you don't know do any of you more wine knowledgable folks know?

A couple at church were raving about Baja Mexico wines last Sunday--zinfandel, cabernet sauvignon and petite syrah. I don't know if they are available in the USA or in your area but the couple plan to bring some home in November when they visit Mexico again.

Sorry Bonita but I've followed the Mexican wine industry for the last 10 years and so far the most comlimentary thing I can say is they are improving. The viniculture practices are coming around and with time the wines of the Baja may become palatible. For now, buy whatever's in your price range at the supermarket. WW
