Can anyone tell me where I can find a list of wine types and their characteristics? I am especially interested in commonly found wines. I want to match wines with foods.

Hi r, and welcome to the Wine Board. You can learn a lot right on this board. We have threads on just about every kind of wine you may be interested in, as well as one of wine and food affinities. Using our search function leads you to quick, specific answers.
Two books that can be a huge help in these areas are by Andrea Immer: "Great Wines Made Simple" treats your first question; and "Great Tastes Made Simple" addresses wine and food matching. Both are available in paperback and used condition from the popular book selling sites such as Amazon. Andrea has done more to bring wine knowledge to the broader population than any other person in recent years.
