I found this in the wine education area of the site. Who makes it and is it reasonable in price? Is this a good wine for beginners who like sweet wines? It sounds as though it would be one I would like to try.

Hi Pam. Succintly answered, No Eiswein isn't cheap. Yes it is delicious. The method of production is as follows. The last of the grapes from vineyard (Normally white varietals) are left on the vines until the 1st freeze of the winter. They are then picked immediately, brought into the winery and pressed while still frozen. As the water is frozen the remaining drop of juice is extremely concentrated, Taakes lots of berries to make a bottle of wine. There are some Late-Harvest wines on the market that you mite try that wont send you to the poor-house. They normally have the RS (residual sugar) % on the label. Anything that shows 6-7% or above is sweet. WW

It runs around $60-$100 a bottle. Look also for Beerenauslese or Trockenbeerenauslese. It's very sweet but about half the price.

Hi,
I work at a wine store and we recently got in Mission Hill Five Vineyards Riesling Ice Wine. It's Canadian... you can buy it in little 187 ml bottles for around $20... It's very nice. most cheap ice wine is syrupy, so i'd avoid that and try to find a small bottle of worthy stuff. This particular bottle is unfortunately not listed on mission hill's website, so if you want it, go to a nice wine store and ask if they can special order it. mission hill has decent distribution, so you may get lucky! It tastes great now, but i'd buy 2 bottles -- drink one and put the other in a cool dark place for 10 years, then drink that one [img]http://www.wines.com/ubb2/smile.gif[/img]
