SW's is WW's description of white wine (Sissy Whites) and I believe that TN stands for Tasting Notes.

Culinart,

I'm very much a newbie, and I love red wines, but much of my "awakening" in wine these past months has has a lot to do with white wines!

This has a lot to do with my unpleasant experience with whites before I decided to investigate them and judge for myself. My experience with whites had been limited to some rather unexciting low-grade brands. In the meantime, I took to reds quite well, partly because I go to Spain a lot and there's a lot of good red to be had there.

But now I'm drinking about as much white as red wine, and I'm really enjoying the variety in the different kinds of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier (thanks, Bucko), Albarino, and others. There's some marvellous stuff out there.

Maybe you should do a follow-up poll asking about red/white preferences and intake...?

tandkvd has the acronyms down. Maybe we should start a glossary of terms and abbreviations, though there aren't that many of them.

Tand>>> WW's description of white wines=sissy whites??.....hahahahahhahaha
I looked in a few books about wines and couldnt figure out what the definition of SW was..heh heh!

quij>>>I am in the same boat as you in the sense of drinking more whites than red the last few months.
When I think of Spain, I hardly think of it as a great white wine region....so it's no wonder you consumed more reds than whites while there. I cant even remember when I last drank a red wine and what it was

"I'm really enjoying the variety in the different kinds of Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier (thanks, Bucko), Albarino, and others. There's some marvellous stuff out there."
>>Please elaborate quijote????
In order for us to recognize some of that marvelous stuff , we need to try them for ourselves.
I'm thinking of a follow up poll but I've been really busy lately with work. Im lucky if I can find time to get a good 8 hours sleep
However, if you came up with one, I'd be more than happy to participate in yours Tongue

1) Between 4 and 5 bottles a Week on a normal week.
2) I’m a novice. I read a lot about wines and have a couple of reference books. But the more I learn the more I realize that I know nothing.
3) I have been a drinker for all my adult life. I basically drink anything with very rare exceptions. Wine is my latest fancy and since is easier to drink and more interesting to learn about than heavy liquor, I gave up most of the other alcohol beverages. The only exceptions and are rare is Beer (Corona Extra) if there is no Wine available or with spicy food, and cordials (Amarretto di Sarono) after dinner.

Salud!

#1) How many bottles of wine do you drink on average per week?

Two with the help of my SO.

#2) And how would you rate your knowledge about wine?

Sadly only one or two steps removed from a true novice. My parents served wine with dinner more often than not through my entire childhood. Somehow I managed not to learn a darn thing, I just enjoyed it and never engaged my mind to the subject. About three years ago I started reading a book about wine every now and then and getting my friends together to help me drink wines with a mind to actually paying some attention to them. Only a bit over a year ago I met my SO and we've been making a habit of cooking two fantastic meals and drinking a bottle of wine with each of them every weekend.

#3) Are you solely a wine drinker or do you indulge in other alcoholic beverages? (and how would you rate them compared to wine on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best and most desirable to drink)

I drink other alcoholic beverages on occasion. Wine is a 10 for me good brandies are probably a 7 and anything else is a five at best.

1) I taste small amounts of maybe fifty wines per week (maybe 75 a DAY when we are on buying trips) but only actually consume maybe three bottles a week as my answer to #3 will explain.

2) I would say I have forgotten more about wine than Verne ever knew but I am blessed (cursed? ask!) with a nearly bug free memory matrix so I can generally drag up that DOC info about Squinzano or remember which 1971 Champagne was best in a Sushi vs Tete du Cuvee tasting we put on in the late eighties... BUT, I do this (buy, sell and write about wine) 24-7-365 and have for over two decades...

I find that I drink at LEAST as much high quality ale (mostly Belgians, some Brits and Germans and the odd Micro from the West Coast) as wine for two reasons: I taste wine all day for work and crave refreshment and something different when I get home and I eat a lot of spicy Thai, Indian and Oaxocan food that is better with beer anyway. ALSO, there has yet to be made the white wine that is more complex and food enhancing than, say, Orval, Chimay Cinq Cent or Rogue's new Chef Morimoto Soba Ale...

'Twas a JOKE oh Revered Master.....Open ANOTHER bottle and relax... What I was talking about is the mixed blessing of having a really good (what is sometimes called "photographic") memory: you remember all the dreck and bullshit as well.

THUS, what I really meant semi-seriously is that I have probably HAD to taste more BAD wine as a part of work than you who, instead, has had the priviledge of drinking the good stuff for centuries AND I remeber every nasty sip and all the crapolla being fed me by the vendors.

Can I send you a bottle of Laqrein to soothe the noives???

I was a bit giddy as I finally got my new five year Visa and my airline tickets to Rio this afternoon. Leaving three weeks from last night.

#1)How many bottles of wine do you drink on average per week?
My girlfriend and I have gotten in to a habit of cooking fantastic meals and opening a bottle of wine with them about two times per weekend. I have a bit in other places but not more than a bottle or so a month.
#2)And how would you rate your knowledge about wine?
I would rate my knowledge as just one or perhaps two steps removed from novice-hood. I grew up in a house where my parents served wine with dinner more often than not yet it was never a topic of conversation and I managed to leave the house at 18 years of age with a taste for wine but absolutely no knowledge of it. Many years later (late 1999) I decided that I was unhappy with my ignorance so read a few books and started to get my friends together to do “wine drinkings” (with the exception of a Riesling that had turned into concentrated evil we don’t spit and do more than taste.)
#3) Are you solely a wine drinker or do you indulge in other alcoholic beverages? (and how would you rate them compared to wine on a scale of 1-10, with 10 being the best and most desirable to drink)
I do indulge in other alcohols on occasion. Wine rates around a nine for me. Good brandies can make it up to 7, beers can get to a 5 and other drinks rarely get more than a 4. (For comparison, a glass of ice water or skim milk at the perfect time can rate a 6 or 7 all other liquids are normally found around four-ville)

Gahh I replied twice!! so sorry (I had thought that the first try didn't go through.)
