Can anyone tell me how long is it safe to drink red wine after it has been uncorked?
I've asked several people and have gotten just as many different answers! Also, if you use one of those manual pump-action vacuum "wine savers" how much longer will the wine last?

- Bucko - 01-08-2002

As long as it is fit to drink, for sure, which isn't but a matter of days. While arguable, those Vacu-vin devices are essentially worthless.

As Bucko says, the pumps don't really work as well as advertised. The premise is good, but the implementation just doesn't deliver. At best, they may add a day or less to the life of the wine. A better solution is a product called Private Preserve. It puts a layer of inert gas on top of the wine, thereby displacing the oxygen.

How much, (estimated) would a Private Reserve cost? Can you describe it in more detail?

Hi Jezmund and welcome to the board. "Private Preserve " Is a blend of inert gases ( N2, CO2, and Ar ) that blanket the wine and force the Oxygen out, thus protecting the wine. IMHO, the best short-term protection from oxidation. WW
