Without the slash, the bulletin board software was not able to find the server's mailing service and, therefore, was not able to use it. I am puzzled though because other mailing functions (registering, sending passwords, etc.) have all been working fine. These functions also utilize Sendmail and they had no problem finding it... Odd.
