I'm going to be in San Diego at the Del Coronado from 27 Feb to 4 Mar for a business conference. Unfortunately, I'll be without wheels. Anyplace I absolutely shouldn't miss (wine related, of course) while I'm there? Keep in mind, it has to be someplace within a reasonable cab ride. Also, I think someone I know may have a car there, and if I'm good at begging and groveling I may be able to talk him into taking a ride. He makes wine (homemade) from his own grapes south of LA, so something to do with wine may just sway him - as long as it's really worthwhile.

You should only be a hope skip and a jump away from La Jolla. Lots of restaurants and shops down the main draw. Remember, La Jolla was designed specifically to keep visitors out and thus the curving street design. You may want to keep a cab company phone number close to hand!
Nice place just to walk around. I would say that is a better place to go than downtown San Diego's old town district.

Thanks, TE. I worked for a unit of GE and our R&D group was in La Jolla. Spent about a week out of every six in La Jolla for a few years. Torrey Pines Inn was my home away from home. Brings back memories.

Well batten the hatches and hide the vestals. La Jolla is about an houd and 1/2 from the Coronado.
If you can get wheels, I highly reccommend my friend Johns' store, Vintage Wines ph. 858-549-2112. Has a terrific selection of all wine producing countries at pretty spectacular pricing. It's on Miramar Rd about the same distance as Torrey Pines. The Coronado has 2 good restaurants and the island itself is fun to graze around on. Have fun. WW

You should be able to participate in tastings at Vintage Wines. I took WW's advice and have been to the store twice. Well worth the visit. You might consider renting a car for a day or two. Doesn't have to be the full time.

I'll second (or third) the rec for visiting Vintage Wines. Anne went on WW's suggestion when she was out there a few months back and has raved about it. She brought back some fantastic (and difficult to find) Pinots.

If you get to La Jolla (quite a jaunt if you don't rent a car), I would recommend Tapenades Restaurant. Wonderful appetisers and entrees and good wine list. (Some of their "small dishes" are quite reasonably priced but by the time you add up two or three courses and wine it can get expensive).
Also really enjoyed a lunch in La Jolla at Crab Catcher on a main drag with a view of the bay. Both excellent meals.
