Roaming the Texas Hill Country today, and stopped by this place outside Johnson City, about 60 miles north of San Antonio. Very nicely laid out, well-groomed property, hospitable owner. Walked out with some '04 Syrah-Cabernet and some '03 Cinque Vino Rosso, a blend of five grape varieties. Wasn't so impressed with the Sangiovese, and haven't found a Texas cab I like yet.

I had a Messina-Hof Cab about 10 years ago that was pretty nice. That was the last Texas wine I had, though there's one bottle of an Armadillo wine someone brought into the shop a few weeks ago. We haven't opened it yet because no one seems to want to be the one to taste it first.

Can't blame 'em. Some of this stuff is only fit for target practice.

Had a bottle of the Syrah-Cab blend tonight with some spicey Mexican roll-ups..... passable but no great shakes. Bottle exhibited a smokiness I hadn't noticed in the tasting room... might have blown off if decanted.
