Anyone ever been to San Miguel de Allende?

If so, what's the wine situation? Anne and I are going for 8 days this July, and we're trying to avoid a customs mess in bringing in our own wine, but the pickings seem slim from my web sleuthing. If I have to live with beer the whole trip I'll survive, but I'd rather have a nice glass of vino once and awhile. Thanks in advance!

Maybe someone who regularly visits Mexico can shed some light some light on the subject. We regularly visit Canada, and have found that they let us bring a bottle for each day we will be there. Could be that Mexico has a similar policy.

Mexican wines are improving according to some sources. You might also check with the property you are staying at to see what their wine list is like.

Thanks, IK. From what I understand, you can carry two bottles into Mexico before having to pay a duty. The problem is the time between our flights into Mexico City and on to Leon. We need to get through customs quickly, and thus we will be carrying on our luggage so that we have an easier time of it. Bringing in wine will only make the passage through customs more time consuming; therefore, we're trying to avoid bringing wine and would like to buy it once we're in San Miguel. We're renting a casita, so there is no wine available that way. I hear the wine situation in Mexico is poor, but improving, but I'd love to get some thoughts from someone who has traveled to San Miguel, specifically, or to Mexico. Again, thanks!

My policy is to plead ignorance. I have rarely had customs problems and transport wines across many borders frequently.
