I stopped buying Viu Manent after 2002 as I thought their malbecs were going downhill. Popped this one the other night. Inky dark purple. Well balanced, rich malbec with pure blackberry and currant flavors with hints of tobacco, dark chocolate and tar. Very nicely made, moderate complexity and a linguring finish. 14.5% Alc/vol. $12. A nice suprise.

For some reason, some wines are seasonal for us. For example, we never pop roses in winter, even though it would be a good match or a lot of the food we drink. Conversely, I don't think we've ever popped a Malbec in any season other than winter (or, rather, the season that passes for winter down here). Anyway, it seems a good time to pick up a few, so this post is very timely. Also, I haven't tried a Viu Manent since the '03, so thanks for the tip!
