As the Atlanta temps turned a bit chilly this past week, even offering us two nights of frost, it signaled a return to what we call "Malbec weather." For some reason, we rarely drink Malbec in any other season, even though we enjoy the grape.

This "Edition Limitada" Malbec is supposed to be a step up for Chilean value producer Morande. However, despite the jump in price point from the usual $10-12 to $17 for this particular wine, there isn't any real qualitative jump. Deep colors would suggest a dark berry nose and flavor profile, but it more closely favors cranberry and oak on the nose. Flavors lean towards earthy, with the fruit somewhat muted. A touch green, in fact. We may have found more fruit if we had cracked it a year or two earlier. Nevertheless, the finish again picks up the oak, with just a bit of prickly spiciness and medium-weight tannins add a bit of weight. Not a bad wine, and "old world" in style is not a negative in our vernacular, but Morande has shown us better daily drinking wines at the lower price point. 13% alc. Again, it ran us $17 before a mixed case discount at a local shop. FWIW, WE gave it an 84.
