Ok first off, I am a complete novice to wines, so bear with me a bit. I was wandering through my local liquor store, in search of something a bit different and have always enjoyed a good merlot. Well to make a long story short, I found an intriguing bottle of merlot, 2001 Vampire Merlot from Regas, Transylvania, Romania for $8. At first scent, I was quite surprised, it was aromatic, a very pleasing and calming scent. Its a dry wine, almost as dry as some Cabernet Sauvignons I have had, but not quite, with a slight burn at the back of my throat and yet, overall, I'm enjoying it. Its easy to drink, not overwhelming with flavors, just a nice blend. Granted my palette isn't quite adjusted to various wines, but I'm enjoying it overall. Just thought you all would enjoy hearing about it.

Have never tried it, and I hear there are better wines out there, but it's got one of the better labels this side of Bonny Doon

As an aside, when I first got into wine, I used to pick out wines in wineshops based upon labels (yes, snickering is allowed at that admission).

Glad you are enjoying your unique wine! Don't find a lot of Transylvanian wines around, huh?

LoL well I didn't really choose it because of the label...chose it more because I saw it was from Romania, and felt like trying something from there, and yea the label is realllly coool lol. Yea, I'm sure there are better wines out there from Romania, but until I leave NJ, I'll take what I can get and just sample different things.

It's great that you are exploring. If I ever see anything from a region that is new to me, I always try and pick up a bottle.

Sometimes it is difficult to get things from outside the established regions here in Atlanta, but I've been able to try some Austrian reds recently as well as several nice Greek wines. Alas, nothing from Romania

Do you have to be long in the tooth (like some of us Board participants) to drink Vampire Wine? Or can you feign (fang) it? And after you drink it, do you have a sudden desire for a "necking session."

Hmmmm I believe you can fang it...and while I didn't get the urge for some necking...it woulda been nice afterwards, esp since its such a lovely dark red shade
