2002 Casa Julia, Carmenere, Maipo Valley, Chile ($9.50 Blue Hill Wine Shop). When the gang at BHWS foisted this one on me, I demanded to know if there were any green peppers in it. They assured me that there were none. I've never been sure whether it was the Chilian Merlot or the Chilian Faux Merlot (Carmenere) that just about turned me off practically all Chilian Wines for good.

This one was clean. A full bodied, but not overpowering wine (13% alcohol). It gave some plums and smoke on the nose and upfront. Chocolate, dirt, and smooth tannin crossed the palate; and the finish was respectable. I guessed that it would go better with broiled fillet mignons than a full blown cab, and was right. We had different veggies again, and it went better with my limas than with her asparagus.

In sum, it is a very nice wine and would pick it up again as long as it stays under $10.
