- Scoop - 01-25-2000 For those who love exuberant black fruit in their wine, but without it being out of control (i.e. with some structure), seek out a bottle of Catena's 1997 Malbec (from Mendoza, Argentina). It is full of amazingly jammy, blackberry fruit, both on the nose and the palate, with a slight hint of oak and soft, medium tannins. And beautifully balanced, with a long clean finish. Great with a roast pork loin with rosemary and garlic. Retail: $15.99 (and a bargain at that price). Cheers, Scoop - Thomas - 01-25-2000 I don't know, scoop. If my wife caught me dining on pork with rosemary by my side she might get angry.... I agree about the wine. - misterjive - 01-28-2000 I've said it once in this forum, I'll say it a thousand times: Flichman Malbec is delicious stuff, and at $3.99 a bottle, it holds its own compared to wines four times that price. I just found out that Southern Spirits distributes Flichman here in Florida, and I have used this knowledge to order a case of Flichman Syrah, which garnered a great review in the Wall Street Journal wine column about a year ago (Flichman Cab is nothing special, by the way). Also, let me repeat like a broken record that Falling Star Merlot/Malbec blend is a favorite quaffing wine o' mine, priced competitively at $4.99 at the Publix down the road. - Innkeeper - 01-28-2000 Chris, thanks for the recommendation. FYI we recently plowed the Argentinia Malbec ground under Best Buys/Steal Deals under Bucko's posting Very Nice Value Wine. - Thomas - 01-28-2000 The Flichman is a great Malbec, and I wish I lived in Florida, becasue it is a lot more than $3.99 here in NY. |
