We have an organization up here that I've belonged to for around ten years now that sponsors bringing in press tours of travel writers two times a year. Last night we had the reception for the fall press tour at one of the really nice B&Bs in Belfast. For the first time we had someone who is wine related on the tour. She is Carol Kotkin the food editor of "The Wine News" She was nice to talk to and enjoyed visiting our area. Liked the local food and was not wild about the local wines.

We have two wineries in the county at opposite ends, and both are members of our association. The tour visits both of them, and most of the writers are impressed. One is called Winterport Winery and they are at the northern end of our area. They operate out of an old Ace Hardware store, and offer only "wines" made from fruit. Some of their offerings are nice beverages even though not wine. I have to bite my tongue in their pressence.

The other operation is Cellardoor Winery in Lincolnville in the southern end of our area. The have a beautiful rural setting with gorgeous flower gardens as well as acres of rolling vineyards. Most of their wine is real, though they do put out a couple of fruity tooties as well. Most of the grapes they use are imported from the Finger Lakes so they carry an American Appelation. Of what is grown locally, the grape I have the hope for is riesling. As of now there is just a tad of the local grapes in their respectable riesling.

At the reception last night the folks from Winterport were pouring offerings from both operations. Bev, Carol, and I all agreed that the best of lot was a Marechal Foch from Cellardoor. I don't think we'll be reading much about it or any of the others in an upcoming "The Wine News."

It was a very nice event though, and some of us are encouraged that wine is being produced locally, and perhaps some day decent wine will be produced around here.

"...and perhaps someday decent wine will be produced around here."

IK, that is a matter of growing degree days; got to have about 195 of them to be sure of wine quality. Do you get that much there?
