I was in a favorite wine store yesterday and the owner "made" me sample a Maryland Cabernet!
"She had my arm behind my back and up to my neck...I swear she did!!" 1996 Catoctin Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon. The following is the vineyard's statement.

Cabernet Sauvignon at Catoctin is actually a cuvee with significant portions of Cabernet Franc blended in for complexity. The wine is fermented with an extended maceration (contact with the skins) in order to extract deep fruit elements and soften the tannic impression. The wine spends up to two years aging in French Nevers oak. Both a regular Cabernet and Reserve have been produced. While the regular is impressive with its bright cherry and berry fruit, the Reserve is a complete knockout! Deep, deep ruby in color, massively fruity and cassis and blackberry layers, and highlighted with notes of tar, black pepper, and anise, the Reserve is a true standard-bearer. A dense barrage of tannins demand that this wine be aged for several years before consumption.

This was a very good, very dark and concentrated, fruit expression, wine. Very little oak, slightly astringent , but we gave no breathing time. $13 a bottle and I would not hesitate to buy one in the future.

Sounds interesting. Will look for it during our trip. Might Atlantic Wines & Liquors have it, though they be in Deleware?
