Retail liquor stores are closed by law here in MA on Memorial Day, so we get together for an annual celebration of the day. This year was my turn to host, so I cooked a ton of good food and we had some terrific wines to go with it (also a few really nice beers).
2009 Creekbend Traminette from Indiana was surprisingly nice.
2009 Commanderie de Peyrassol Rose
2008 Schwarzbock Gruner Veltliner
2007 David Coffaro Escuro
All the above were really nice, but the next five were the hits of the show.
NV Mumm de Cramant
1996 Marietta Angeli Cuvee
1998 Le Vieux Donjon CdP
2001 Casa Lapostolle Apalta
2004 Willow Crest Esprit Froisse - This is a desert wine made from Chardonnay grapes left on the vine and naturally infected with Botrytis Cinerea. The result is an amazingly rich wine. One of the tasters yesterday, who's been ITB almost 40 years, said it was the best desert wine he's ever had.
A good time was had by all.

What are the grapes in the Casa Lapostolle? Is Apalta a grape variety or a proprietary name for the wine?
Willow Crest--that brings back memories.
I have a late-harvest Chardonnay from Lioco to try at some future date.

Apalta is the proprietary name of a blend of Carmenere, Merlot and Cab Sauv from 60 to 100 years old vineyards.
