I can not agree with James Suckling that he has picked the 50 best wines that Italy has to offer. Re: WINE SPECTATOR Feb Issue lead article "The Best of Italy, James Suckling rates Italy's 50 Most Exciting Wines."

He hardly bothered to expand his taste buds beyond Piedmont and Tuscany. Then he hits on wines that are mostly Super Tuscans or International Style from small or limited productions that cost lots of bucks. On top of that most will never make it to America.

Only the elite and monied few benefit from articles like his. What good is that to the rest of us. There are some very good wines from Friuli and Abruzzi, which he seems to have ignored.

What a shame.............

Just got in three different Collio Merlots form Pops, none costing more than $15.00. Stay tuned.

That is exactly why I let my subscription to WS lapse a year or two back. While there is some good info to be had, there is too much BS such as that descibed above. Now that I think about it, I don't really miss it that much. I was always scoping their best buys for a "find", but I've found plenty of great wines at great prices from this board, as well as other sources. I'm tempted to go on a full fledged rant, but I think I'll just quietly concur with Dutton's assessment and let it go at that.

The Wine Expectorant writers do tastings not with their palates open but with their wallets wide open--think advertising money, not to mention junkets. ...

That's exactly what I had suspected, Foodie.
