I don't usually purchase wine by the case but today I went to a wine store for a particular French wine. The wine was on sale for $9.49 per bottle and I inquired about case discounts in general. The owner told me 20% for full case, 15% for mixed case. I asked for a case of the particular sale wine and when I got to the register I was charged the $9.49 per bottle plus tax. Here's the question. Is it common practice not to offer case discount on sale wine. I brought my question to the owners attention and his response was..."I hope you didn't think you'd get 20% on sale wine?" Well I was hoping.....the next time I won't think!

It has been my experience that sale wines are final price, no further discounts. Others?

Drew, out west here, the sale price is usually non-negotiable. If the regular price was less than 12 bucks, I`d have certainly talked to the proprietor about the question. It`s always easier to ask in advance. Takes the embarressment out of bargaining for those SW. hehehe. Winoweenie

In my experience, the sale price preempts the case discount: it you get it on sale, you don't get the discount too. But I think the shop should post that information for all to see. There's no point in embarrassing, and therefore alienating, a good customer.

Although, in my experience, most shops won't discount beyond the sale price, what some shops will do is count sale bottles toward a case in mixed cases.
Therefore if you buy six bottles of sale wine and six that aren't sale items, you get the (mixed)case discount on the non-sale items. It never hurts to ask.

I must agree with the others on here. In the store in which I work, we will not discount a case of sale wine, but we will count sale bottles in a mixed case. In our particular store there is no ratio controlling how many of those bottles need to be full price bottles....a loop hole my boss knows about, but has left alone. It is interesting how few people abuse our system. We rarely have people bring up 11 sale bottles and 1 full price bottle....its usually a more even mix, and so we have not bothered to post a notice spelling out a ratio. On average tho, I would bet most stores have a ratio they want followed and it would be a good idea to ask before bringing your 'would be' purchases to the counter.
