After church yesterday, we drove up to San Marcos and met daughter for lunch at Mamacita's, a nice Mexican restaurant near SW Texas U. She had driven down from her home in College Station, a couple of hours to the NE. We delivered some frozen burger patties that we'd grilled Saturday night, since she loves those things almost as much as the babybacks, then spent the afternoon in what daughter calls "retail therapy" at the Outlet Mall - hundreds of factory outlet stores along IH35 south of San Marcos. We all still managed to return home by dark, having done our best to boost retail sales figures of Bass Shoes, Vanity Fair, etc. No complaints at all. When we got home, I chilled out with a couple of glasses of the PR Rutherford Cab. Sweet.

Had a fairly memorable Father's Day. Received paper cards, very nice ones, from two of our daughters, and a e-card from a third. All three of those also called. All I heard from the fourth was one of the most touching e-mail messages I have ever received. When I read it to mother, got all chocked up. Sigh!

As for food and wine, it was posted on the New York thread: http://www.wines.com/ubb2/Forum28/HTML/000047.html

Have you been to the inn at Boerne? We were there for lunch on a recent trip to San Antonio. Beautiful and tasty food (reasonably priced, at least at lunch) and a very nice wine list.

That query was directed at the Texas lad. Monsieur Innkeeper snuck in while I was typing.

IK'll do that to you. I believe he has about the fastest reactions on the board. He must have an alarm rigged up to let him know when a message comes in.

Hi, Auburn. You bet, we've been there. It's become a popular place - usually crowded, like most good restaurants these days.

My nine-year-old got a lovely culotte steak off the "kids' menu." We had to remind him of the importance of sharing. Come to think of it, however, he helped himself to a pretty good portion of my lamb stew.

The Hill Country is a wonderful corner of the world. I fear that too many people realize that, though -- and the Austin sprawl will continue to sprawl and sprawl in that direction.

How's the Texas wine industry these days? I lived in Lubbock in the early 80's and they were producing some very satisfactory whites (like wonderfully flowery Columbards!).

Hill Country wineries are still struggling with distribution problems. For example, we had planned to visit the Fall Creek outlet that had been quite visible at the mall when we were last there, but it was nowhere to be seen this trip. It may have only been relocated, rather than withdrawn, but we sure couldn't find it in the short time we were there. Their Sauvignon Blanc happens to be one of the few Texas wines that we've found we enjoy, so we had planned to buy a case yesterday. So much for that idea. And just try to find Messina Hof Zin in the San Antonio area! The winery is only 175 miles away, but might as well be on the dark side of the moon. The wine-buying public and small producers continue to be victimized by the wholesalers' cartel.
