Now I know this is nuthin compared to Buffalo or even to up there in IK country. However, we finally got some snow around here in Southeastern Virginia.

About 5 to 6 inches based on what was on top of the cars this morning. Accumulations are expected to be higher further inland; some are saying as much as 10 to 12 inches.

A damp, wet snow fell thru the night and into this morning. Lots of bended boughs on my larger shrubs and smaller trees but probably no real damage. I even expect the winter pansies to survive!

Will stay indoors today, after the obligatory trip outside to shovel off the sidewalks and the driveway and clean off the cars. I just might pop open a bottle or two of red wine, make a smoked beef tenderloin platter with lots of horseraddish, put a log or two in the fireplace and snuggle up with the wife and a good book! Nice day for doing stuff like that........

Heh, heh. We have mostly green grass with a couple of inches of pilings by the side of the road here in the "north" country.

Missed the storm all together here on the west shore of the bay...different story on the east shore.

We have nothing on the ground here in central Massachusetts. It is really cold, though - not supposed to be much over 30 today. This is not good for the perennials. They need the snow cover to survive the winter cold. Us humans, on the other hand, can certainly live with Mr D's suggestion - stay inside with the red wine.

At my place in the Finger Lakes we had just white dustings over New Year's but quite low temperatures. I like that--the no snow, not the low temps.

But we should all be grateful: there was snow in Venice last week, and for the first time in history it snowed in Corsica. Now that is serious stuff.

6"-12" in parts of North Carolina. Non-essential personnel did not have to report to Fort Bragg Thursday but were told to come in on a two-hour delay Friday.
I'm supposed to work this evening for a reservists' Civil Affairs officers class. Half the class are stranded in Dallas, Cincinnati, Charlotte, NC etc. I'm negotiating with the principal instructor to close down at 6:30 PM instead of 9:00 PM as slush may turn to ice after dark. (I think we are compromising at a 7:00 PM closure.) On the day off yesterday I enjoyed a Lingenfelder Bird Label Riesling (notes later) and a couple shots of the tawny port opened on New Year's Eve. I didn't enjoy Nebraska's loss to Miami although we did win the second half! I was rooting for NU to get one more touchdown to make the score respectable. Barnesy, Bucko and other Northwesterners--Oregon and Joey Harrington were really impressive in the Fiesta Bowl!
