There is a story from the London Times over on the Wine Press today that says that two German scientists have come up with a process of microwaving corks before sticking them into wine bottles. Allegedly it cures cork of all its ills, thus eliminating need for screwtops or synthetic corks.

Right on IK! I wrote this in a European Union newsletter last August:

"Oenophiles rejoice! Wine ruined because of chemical or microbial contamination from corks -- a.k.a. "corked" wines --could become a thing of the pasts thanks to EU-fund research. A consortium of (enlightened) small companies from Germany, Portugal and Spain, together with a German research institute, have discovered a technique using microwaves to penetrate the corks, which prevents them from chemically reacting with the contents of the bottle. Funding for this worthy project came from the European Commission's CRAFT program, which helps small firms without sufficient research capability on their own to access the latest technology through research institutes. Cheers!"

Now that's a fine use of taxpayers' money!

Cheers,

Hate to blow your cork...... it doesn't work effectively. This was hot news a year ago and this article just rehashes old news. Several trials by US concerns show poor results.
