I've got cable, too, from Time-Warner ("Roadrunner"), and love it. The problem with DSL is service area.... you've got to be within a very short distance of one of the phone company's relay stations to even be able to buy it. For me, it was no contest, if I wanted broadband, it had to be cable modem.

I had to go with cable because I am too far away from the telephone company's switch for DSL.
I had been holding out for DSL with my previous ISP - mindspring.com. But because our house is more than a couple of miles from the telephone company switch, we can't do DSL. Dial-up was costing me charge for the ISP and the second phone line.
Cable hook-up is with cox.net. The monthly service charge is less than I was paying for ISP and telephone line for dial-up.
And man does it whiz. Speed is amazingly fast. Web sites show up in parts of a second instead parts of a minute.
And to top it all off, if I have to use a modem for something, I still have it available.

Since you're now connected to the Net full-time, highly recommend you have an effective firewall. I use ZoneAlarm, downloaded from Zone Labs (zonelabs.com) and really appreciate the total control that it provides the user. Lots of configurable features, like alerting you when another computer is attempting to access your machine (you'd be amazed how often that happens). I think it was about $30 for the pro version (was free for the private user until recently).

Thanks for the tip. I have a firewall already. Was using it with the dial-up connection.
I am using Norton Internet Security. It seems to work okay for me. I use it along with Norton Anti-Virus. I have a subscription with them that automatically updates virus information.

I agree about Norton for virus protection, I use it too. But ZoneAlarm protects the user from intrusion, which is the Achille's heel of cable modems. Must admit I'm not familiar with Norton's Internet Security feature, so I shouldn't comment on that; only have experience with their anti-virus function, which works well IMO.

Norton Internet Security is supposed to be protecting me from intrusion also. I've even gotten a couple of 'intrusion alarms' in the past when I was connected via the dial-up.
The security program gave me the DSN of the intruders and I was able to file a complaint with their ISPs.

Good for you. I'm now getting several intrusion attempts per day. Don't have any idea who these folks might be.

WW's mention of rustlers reminded me of something. My grandfather was a U.S. marshal during the Depression--appointed under FDR's administration. One of his main duties involved catching cattle rustlers.

Unfortunately we do not have cable or DSL at our new home. Hell, we don't even have gas -- had to get propane.
I got Direcway satellite modem. The uploads are not much faster than 56K, however the downloads are screaming fast.

I have a cable connection- it is incredibly fast ! Installed both Norton packages- they were recommended by a computer geek friend who uses them on his personal computer,so I feel pretty comfortable with them.
