More than 20 counties were declared disaster areas, so there will be both federal and state assitance available. It may be in the form of low-interest loans, though, and those must be repaid. Still, it could have been worse. We're still grateful for the rain.

Excavations of any kind are incompatible with cattle-raising. The survey networks are nothing but tangles for the critters to get balled up in, and there's the problem of controlling access; we don't want folks just comin' and goin' willy-nilly. And there's the other factor that's hard to describe: the place has been in the family for so long that it's sacred to us. We don't exploit it, and we don't allow others to. What's still in the ground will be there to enthrall future generations. We try not to leave a lot of footprints.

good idea about the control on digging, Hotwine. Your description of the site just got me itchy. too many areas have been spoiled by greedy or untrained people, spoiling them for future generations.
