I am moving to Italy next year and a friend was telling me about these "gas station pumps" that dispense wine. There are three choices; Red, White, and Blush! Has anyone else ever heard of such a thing?

This is the every day wine indicative of a wine culture. The wines are vino de tavola (table wine), but are supposed to be pretty decent. Bring your own bottle, point and squirt. Sounds good to me.

The oldest custom related to wine, still remaining in some European quarters, is for the consumer to bring the container and have the retailer fill it at the pump or, more accurately, at the cask.

Originally, the system was to protect consumers from fraud -- they could see what they were getting.

This was being done with wine and beer in the early nineteen fifties, in my Brooklyn, NY Italian-American neighborhood.
