I had an interesting three days starting last Thursday. A wine dinner with Merry Edwards on Thursday during Triangle Wine Experience (will post later), a free tasting at Seaboard Wines in Raleigh Friday with Mr. Edwards representing Miner Family wines and Mr. Hall from Patz and Hall, and attendance at Evening of Care Saturday to benefit Fayetteville's Care Clinic (free medical care for the needy.)
The Evening of Care is catered dinners in private homes. The two couples sponsoring/hosting the dinner I attended had about 20 diners in all. Three were sponsored soldiers from Fort Bragg from an Air Defense Artillery unit. They represented the diversity of today's Army. One was from California and had spent two years as a Mormon missionary in the Philippines and entered the Army at more mature age. He has also worked in construction, auto body repair and knows welding. One was born in Colombia, South America and his family moved to Chicago six years ago. He has been in the military for about a year. The female is from a small town in my home state of Nebraska and is of Korean descent. She wants to learn enough Korean to be certified as a translator. She refuels the unit vehicles and sometimes puts in 13-hour days when they are deployed. She was on call this weekend and had to go in to work on Sunday. I was impressed by all three. They haven't deployed overseas yet but may be going in October.
