I got Oz Clarke's New Essential Wine Book for Xmas.
Published in 2005, full of color photographs, organized by regions, good introductory material on varieties, tasting, storing, serving, and the production of... then the good stuff, lots and lots of information on France, maps, classificatons, climate and soil, varieties grown in the region discussed, comparisons with American varieties (ex. Burgundy chardonannay vs Sonoma chardonnay). Well written in a conversational, witty, sometimes humorous style.
All the other major regions in all the various countries are represented, in descending order of importance (according to the author), Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, etc.
He breaks the USA down into three major areas, California, the Pacific NW, and the East Coast. Australia is also broken down into areas, as is Eastern Europe.
A very good read and a great comprehensive guide for $24..

Sounds like a great book. I received the "greatest estates" book from Parker. I love the extra notes, vineyard practices and photos of everything. Great book as well. 5 years ago, a wine book would have made me say "why ?" Now, I can't stop reading 'em.

I saw the Parker book in my local bookstore and almost bought it. It's next on my list!
