I saw Andrea Immer on CNN Headline News yesterday. She's cute!

Matchmaker, matchmaker make him a match...

- Innkeeper - 12-28-2002

Understand she's a single mom these days. Might be a bit too old for you young man.

- Botafogo - 12-28-2002

I nearly broke a brand new TV one day by throwing a large belgian beer bottle at it when I saw her make what our grandmothers would call a Grasshopper (a ladies drink with cream and mint liquor), pour it in a triangular glass and pronounce it a "Mint-tini"! Martinis have two ingrecients: Gin and vermouth (no vodka). She is but a temptress from the dark side...definitions are the foundation of culture.

Was that the day that WineExpo wrote off the 1st 4 stacks that " Suddenly Corrapsed? "(giggle). ww

Hey, I like kids.

Coincedentally I just got one of her books as a gift -- Great Wines Made Simple. Have you all read this?

- Innkeeper - 12-29-2002

Have it and have also made frequent reference to it. An excellent read and reference. Also have her two books published this year: "Andea Immer's Wine Buying Guide for Everyone" and "Great Tastes Made Simple." The buying guide is another excellent, easy to carry, reference. "Great Tastes" has not been finished yet. Report to follow.

I have the "Great Wines Made Simple." It is indeed a good text to use.

Roberto, we purists are a fading phenomenon...

I love Andrea, she was nice enough to send me an email after I'd posted several wine questions & suggestions at her website. Pretty girls who email me are aces in my book, and can henceforth do no wrong. I've read her first two books and recommend 'Great Wine Made Simple' to all. I haven't read her latest one "Great Tastes Made Simple" but it's on my list.

I may love her to pieces but add me to the 'purist' camp when it comes to this recent unexplained wave of calling any and all cocktails martinis. There are no Mint-tinis, nor are there Mint-Martinis. A Martini is gin (or vodka for the heathen) + vermouth + olives for fiber and vitamins, and that's an end to the story. There are no mint-tinis, no brandy + lemon + Gran Marnier-tinis, no tequila + lime + triple sec-tinis, no rum + pineapple/coconut-tinis, no bourbon + sweet vermouth-tinis. There are Grasshoppers, Sidecars, Margaritas, Pina Coladas, Manhattans. These cocktails have a proud history that's not to be dismissed by pretty girls and young guys with goatees adding 'tini' to the end of another word.

Let's hear no more talk of Mint-tinis. If you want to drink a Grasshopper, order a Grasshopper and face the laughter like a man.

Best thing that ever cured me of wanting to get drunk was a night of Stingers--or were they Stingtinis?

Haven't gotten drunk since--thirty years now-- and still believe that a Martini is a drink of Gin and Vermouth (the latter mainly an essence that is passed over the glass).

I did the same thing, Foodie. That had to be the worst hangover ever! Must have been cheap brandy in that thing. Think I stayed drunk for three days on two Stingers, and I can't even remember the young lady's name.

Martoonies are best made IMHO with quality gin straight from the freezer, over which you softly chant "vermooooooooooouth". And an olive. Can't leave out the veggie food group.

My destroyer was Vodka Collins at age 17. Have not been able to touch vodka eversince. Even put white rum in my Bloody Marys.

- Bucko - 01-01-2003

You all are a bunch of lightweights. When I was 23, we were celebrating completion of our scuba diving course at a Mexican Restaurant.

Thirteen margaritas later they had to pour me out of the place. But hey, I still like tequila. Hoo ahh!

- Thomas - 01-01-2003

...not to brag, but the Stinger episode was the last in a string of voluminous swallowings of strange and potent liquids--one, while in the Air Force, was a night with grain alcohol and orange juice preceded by copious ounces of potato salad...never saw the Blood, Sweat and Tears concert that night but the potato salad lasted until the following week, going of course in the opposite direction.

And then there was the time I opened the door of a car to get out, but found the vehicle still in motion along the main drag of a street in Tehran, Iran. They escorted me out of that country...

when I make a martini for a client, I pour in a little vermouth, swish it around and pour it out. Then I fill the glass with ice cold gin (or vodka if preferred) and drop in an olive. My killer drink was the screwdriver. I lost count after 10 rounds... Couldn't face vodka for quite a while. Haven't gotten drunk since that episode, which was in college.

I experienced the "spinning room" phenom after chugging German beers at a ski week in Garmisch. We were doing a conga dance around the room and I landed on the floor at one point but my body was so relaxed that I suffered no bruises. Was still ready to compete in the class ski races the next day.
