Just back from a 2 1/2 week, 5000 mile roadtrip from here to Omaha, to San Antonio, and back by way of the Gulf Coast and Appalachia. Saw, bought, and drank many fine wines along the way. One store that sort of stands out is the Balcones branch of Twin Liquors at 5408 Balcones, Austin, TX 78731. The place was packed with wonderful wines, but most starting around $35.00 and up, and up. It would have been a Mecca for any of you deep pockets types. I found a 1999 Domaine des Espiers, Cotes du Rhone that was on sale for $10.99 reduced from $12.99. I sort of backed up to the register with it, expecting a snotty clerk to ask if that was all I could afford (it was). Instead a cheerful young man congatulated me on a great buy, and gave me lots of background info on it. Although it is almost as young as a Nouveau Beaujolais, it already shows splendidly after a short rest after opening. If this one is any indication, 1999 should be a spectacular year for Cotes du Rhone.

Thanks for that info, Innkeeper. I'm very fond of Rhone wines, and 70 miles isn't too far to drive to a good wine shop. (Just printed your posting, and a copy of a Yahoo map. Looks like it's just a short distance west of I35.)
Five thousand miles in 2 1/2 weeks was a lot of driving!
