Had this delicious bottle at a local restaurant this weekend. The nose was rather closed and didn't reveal much, at least to me, but taking a sip uncovered brilliant red fruits and great, mouth-watering acidity. All nicely balanced by a touch of darker fruit, a little earth, and fine tannins. 12.5% alcohol. Delicious, and a lovely food wine. Went great with flank steak au poivre, and I was quite pleased with the price at $24. If I can find it retail I'll be even happier.

My question: what does the "Gouleyant" mean? I looked up Vigouroux on the web--he seems to be a large negociant (sp?) in the region, handling the grapes of several estates, each of which produces it's own line of wines named for the estates, but the Gouleyant bottling isn't mentioned on his website. I tried to find where this might be sold nearby, and a couple stores carry "Cahors Gouleyant," but don't mention the producer; and I read a reference on the web to "the Gouleyant style," but couldn't find it in any of my wine reference books. Any insights?

Gouleyant is a French descriptive term meaning "easy to drink".

Ah, thank you, Drew. Makes sense--they're trying to distinguish it from the "black Cahors" of legend. Certainly was easy to drink, though it was also certainly more than that.
