2001 Pipestone Vineyards, Paso Robles, Estate Grown, Grenache ($22 at Winery). Alcohol 15.9%!! For those of you who think that Granache makes a whimpy wine, this one's for you. Gives you a ton of fruit, including red and black cherries, red and black berries, and plums on the nose and upfront. Incredible complexity including a variety of spices and pepper cross the palate, and the finish rings three bells. The wine was so full and complex, I didn't notice the alcohol level until I read the bottle this morning. Surprise! Matched with sauteed ham pieces in rich cream sauce. What a way to spend Thursday evening!

Sounds great! I'll look out for it. How would you compare it to some of the Spanish Garnacha, particularly the old viney stuff? Or is it more S. Rhone-like? Or is it more New World and unlike both?

New World, similar to but better than those from Oz. Very small production, and loathe to ship where they shouldn't. If ever in P.R. it is a stop worth making.
