I thought this would have been one of the most frequently asked questions but found none after reviewing back 100 days. Shrimp Scampi is one of my favorite dishes but rarely come up with what seems the right wine to enjoy with it. My scampi is full of garlic with lemon, onion and parmasean cheese undertones. Any suggestions on the perfect wine?

Lucky you Craig. Living in Oregon, you just have to trot down to your local retailer and ask for a light Oregon Pinot Noir. If you insist on having a SW, ask for a big Oregon Pinot Gris.

Craig, Welcome to the board.I love pairing Scampi with various soft reds. Hate to say this , but think yhat Sutter Home White Merlot would make a suitable wine. The merlots in a lil` larger style are good candidates. Not to be repititous, try several and pick the one that fits your palate.winoweenie

I would choose the 1998 Thommasi Pinot Grigio, a wine from a single vineyard, single estate, and single vintage, for only $10-$12.

Try a full bodied white with high acidity and little or no wood. You need the acidity to cut through the fat in the butter and the shrimp.

I normally find Pinot Grigio sharp, flat and insipid but if you can find the the 1999 Zenato it is inexpensive and actually has some character. Teruzzi & Puthod makes a White Sangiovese called Carmen Puthod that is a great wine, not only for your scampi but for a lot of other things as well.

Regards.

Tommasi, insipid? I don't think so. Although it would help if I could remember to leave out the "h".

Would like to point out the Pinot Gris is the same damn grape, they grow it in his back yard, and we did prescribe a full one.

I hear you, IK. I'm sure your recommendations are right on target.

We drink pinots with it, but also can suggest maybe a vernaccia di San Gimignano, which we enjoyed with shrimp scampi while we were in Italy. Then again, we were in Italy and we enjoyed everything...

If you cna find the vernaccia, try it with your scampi. Otherwise, Pinot Grigio is a good bet, as is Tocai Friuliano.

Also, try Dolcetto.

I do not offer producer names mainly because there are so many good ones out there. Your retailer can help in that department.
