I started inventorying my wine collection and discovered I have some older white wines which should be consumed (or possibly poured down the drain). Last night I opened a 1988 Wehlener Sonnenuhr Spatlese from Dr. Pauly Bergweiler purchased in California some years ago for $14.99. I am pleased to say that while it is probably past its peak, it was not spoiled. (It is from a great vineyard and a good producer so that may make the difference).
9% alcohol gold color of older rieslings
nose: light floral scents with heavier woodsy notes (cedar possibly although that is usually associated with red wines)
palate: true to nose
Slightly chewy quality. Could accompany a baked apple or fruit tart or fruit pie. I will enjoy finishing the bottle.
