Hello all,

well, I probably have kind of a weird question, but nevertheless it's meant seriously.
A British friend of mine told me recently that one of their most famous wines there is the German branding called "Hock" from Rheinhessen. I never heard of it and would like to know more about it. So if anyone of you knows more about it, would you be so kind and let me know?
And the second part OF MY QUESTION IS:
This friend also told me the one famous sparkling white wine they often drink and which is from GERMANY too is called Lambrusco. No joke.
I always drank Lambrusco knowing it as it being an Italian red wine, so I wonder if there exists a prosecco with the same name ... made in Germany.
Can it be like this.
Well, it really may sound funny to you, but I'm really wondering about this and would like to know if I'm thinking wrong or right.
Thank you in advance.

Masotti

I had understood "hock" to be rather a generic term used in England for Rhein wines (I thought from the Rheingau region but it might extend to Rheinhessen also). The lambrusco reference is Greek (or Italian) to me. I used to enjoy an Italian lambrusco called Countess Matilda or something similar. I haven't had it recently.

Hey Wondersofwine,
thank you for your reply! - Indeed, the friend of mine bought a bottle of "Hock" and read to me it's from Rheinlad-Pfalz. Never heard of that wine though!
And well, the Lambrusco - she was so wrong! - is indeed an Italian wine (I only knew it as such). It's mainly red, sometimes you can get a rosé, and it's a little bit sparkling, and very sweet. There exist less sweet ones, but not easy to find.
Sorry for my non-wine-language, I'm not a big wine fan, more a beer drinker :-)
Cheers anyway,

Masotti

Unlike you I'm not much of a beer drinker. However, when I lived in Germany I sometimes had dunkel bier such as Alt Dusseldorfer and very occasionally I will have Heineken's, Coors or a Czech pilsener.
