1999 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Majoratsfullung Riesling Extra Dry

Sparkling German Riesling.

A fine sparkling wine, but lacks a lot of the "riesling" character I was hoping for. this is the first sparkling riesling I had tried. Fruity nose with hints of toast. Same on the palate with good acidity. I was really hoping for more riesling character. It was good, but I was disappointed. I am not sure if this typical of sparkling riesling, or if its just this one.

Barnesy,

Not sure which character you missed in it, but it's been my experience that sparkling Rieslings can be great wines, but the bubble-making process changes their characteristics, likely because the grapes are picked before fully ripened.

I missed the mineral and apples that are so prevalent in German wines. I've got another bottle of the stuff. We'll give it another pop and rereview it.

If it's produced in the Champagne method, yeastiness can get strong enough to overtake the characteristics that you mention.

I suggest that you approach the wine as if it were a Champagne competitor and not a Riesling...you might like it better then.
