In Germany when the "Spargel" season comes around, I have had asparagus as an entree with Riesling. However, I was wondering if Sauvignon Blanc might be a better match since asparagus is a fairly strongly flavored vegetable. Any thoughts on good matches?

Sauvignon Blanc would be a perfect match for asparagus. Try one from New Zealand.

Seconded. Many times the nose of N Zealand SB reminds me of asparagus.

That's funny. I love Kiwi SB, and hate asparagus.

White asparagus and Gewurztraminer is an Alsatian delight.

Enjoyed numerous plates of weis Spargel in drawn butter with a Mosel Kabinett or Spatlese. Wonderful stuff! One of my enduring images of the Rhein Valley is seeing farming families camped out overnight, awaiting the tips of asparagus to poke above their mounds, so the plants could be dug up before turning green in the sunlight.

Hotwine, northern Italians cover asparagus plants with a white sheeting that prevents the sun from getting at them and turning them green.

A terrific lunch I had in a small town in the north was white asparagus topped with poached egg, plus a glass (maybe three) of the local Sauvignon Blanc.

Wonderful how different regions adapt cuisine to local wines or wines to local cuisine, pairing white asparagus in Germany with Rieslings, Alsace with Gewurztraminer and Northern Italy with a local SB. Thanks for your replies.
