egly-ouriet brut "les vignes de vrigny" 100% pinot meunier. disgorged june '04 after 36 mo in the cellar. $45
celebrated my birthday yesterday with this unusual champagne.

Egly makes my favorite nv brut, so i was excited to try this wine.

when i popped the cork i got a huge whiff of bread dough.
poured brilliant gold color with some copper undertones.
smelled very bready with a slight grassy note and a touch of cinnamon (i get that cinnamon note in most egly champagne)
very bright, very bubbly and very dry and acidic in my mouth, but full-bodied. tart orange amd peach fuzz are lightly fruity, but the most obvious (and unusual) feature of the wine is a long long long weird sourdough bread finish. tangy, sour, just plain weird. a bit creamy, too.

i liked it overall pretty well, but it doesn't touch the brut tradition let alone the rose. definitely worth trying, though.

I tried a PM champers a year or so ago, after finding it on give-away price at Costco. Can't even find a cellarbook entry for it now, much less a TN on the board; believe there was one bottle left, but I must have hidden it away in a dark recess so I wouldn't pull it again. Can't find or remember the label.... just recall it having a "sweet & sour flower" finish, like a bunch of flowers that have sat on the dining table a week too long. Memorable enough for me to mentally log it as "stay far away from PM champers, dude!"

Just a reply to maintain "less than 20 day" status and contribute to preservation for posterity. <LOL>
