Maybe somebody could help me. I'm looking for a definitive list of all the true champagnes. I have an extensive explanation of soils, regions, prunig styles, etc... but what wines are truly champagnes????. Thank you

Hi Boomer, and welcome to the Wine Board. If it is made in France and says Champagne on the bottle, it is. If if isn't made in France, it isn't.

thanks inn keper, but what I am looking for is somrething a little more specific. I have all the requirements as decredd by le Comité Interprofessionnel du vin de Champagne, but what I need is an actual list.
My kid has a school project, it is to find the number of registered champagnes, its for some history thing that involves the monks. THanks again

boomer, welcome. The following is taken from a reference book I have and I don't know if a total list is available due to the large # of producers. Suggest some research through a search engine like Google.com.

"Of 5,000 Champagne-producers, there are 2,000 "récoltants-manipulants" (RM - growers and producers), who do everything themselves, harvesting the grapes, vinification, right through to managing sales. The rest are "récoltants coopérateurs" (RC - growers and members of co-operatives) who hand over their grapes for vinification by a co-operative. The latter returns the bottled wine, which they then sell under their own label, from their own vineyard, as if they had made it themselves, using only their own grapes. Although deceptive, this practice is nonetheless legal."

Looks like it may be a bit difficult to list all 5000+ Champagne producers here. Where's Tom Stevenson?

- Thomas - 12-13-2001

Tom's probably out updating his last Champagne listing...

Sorry I haven't been around guy's, but if you have any questions you need a hand with, please feel free to email me an URL to click on. If I'm around, I'll do my best.

Hi Boomer, click on the following and you'll find over 300 true Champagne producers:

From Drew's reply, you'll gather that it's a long way from being comprehensive, but it includes all the most famous names and is probably more than you need.
