Have you tried this champagne? I received this millenium bottle for a gift and wondered if you have heard of it and if it is worth opening and drinking?

THanks

On the one hand this is nothing special, just the regular non-vintage based on the 1996 vintage (ie., plus reserve wines). On the other hand, however, Mumm turned the corner quality-wise in 1995, after a number of years peddling inferior products with a malolactic aroma that was so overwhelming that it sometimes stank of sauerkraut. The head winemaker was put out to grass, his number two spent two years sorting out the cellars, getting rid of the absolute worst, while cleaning up the winemaking process. He hired a new assistant, Dominque Demarville, who was effectively in control of all the wines produced in 1995, the watershed year, and took over in 1996, which was a truly orgasmic vintage (theoretically better than 1990, although we will have to wait until we know how many have done this extraordinary year justice). So with your non-vintage Greenwich Meridian 2000 you have the first glimpse at Dominique's transformation of Mumm. In my Champagne & Sparkling Wine Guide 2000 I describe this wine as "Very fresh and elegant, with light, fluffy fruit. This is the style that made Mumm a true Grande Marque and it is very satisfying to see this house back on form." So, enjoy!
