- JohnG - 05-11-2003 I couldn't pass up a bottle of Penescal sauvignon blanc for $6.99. Earlier I'd tried their temperanillo for the same price, and found it to be a nice quaffer, good for burgers, pizza, etc. The SB was ok. A very light straw in color, it basically was a one-note wine: grapefruit on the nose, on the palate, and, briefly, on the finish. It neither had the opulent tropical fruit of a New Zealand SB, nor the minerally crispness of a good Loire SB. My wife compared it to a wine cooler, but I think that is a bit harsh. This was the first Spanish white I've tried, so I have no idea how representative this one is. - Thomas - 05-11-2003 I doubt it is representative of the best. Look for Albarino--a varietal produced in Galicia. Even ww would like it. I love it. - quijote - 05-11-2003 I've been buying up some delicious albarino lately, particularly the Martin Codax brand, but there seem to be quite a few around. Let us know what you get and what you think about it (and since you're in Mke, let me know where you got it!). - JohnG - 05-12-2003 Thanks for the tips on Albarino; I'll definitely look for some. Now that it's warming up (finally), I'm jonesing for some good whites! |
