Dreadful stuff. I selected a glass of old vines Pouilly Fuisse off the winelist to go with my flounder stuffed with crabmeat, orzo and asparagus. I was looking forward to trying this Pouilly Fuisse after really liking the one at the Mommessin tasting in March. Waitress hadn't brought the wine as I was finishing my appetizer (fried eggplant), so I asked about it. She inquired and said they were out of the Pouilly Fuisse. The winelist had a Pinot Gris from Alsace and a Pinot Grigio from Italy (not my favorite varietal) one Riesling which didn't sound intriguing and a bunch of California chards. I went for the Silverado Sauvignon Blanc (the New Zealand S.B. was only available by the bottle) and it was a disaster. A $5.00 glass and I could only drink about three sips. It tasted like a tongue depressor quickly dipped into wine and then retrieved! IK warned earlier that Californians know how to mess up other white wines besides chardonnay and he was right! They do a great job with a number of red wine varietals but sure can mess up the white varietals!

In all fairness some savy Californians have observed that New Zealand is stealing the SB market. You have to pay attention to determine which ones. Kenwood for one, seems to backing off the oak more and more each vintage. It is still not sans oak, but they are getting there.

Thanks for the tip. I'm going to send a note to the partners at this restaurant and suggest that they offer Sancerre or New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc by the glass or half bottle and a few other recommendations for white wines.

I saw bottles of this Silverado on a sale shelf today; I think they were going for about $10. Thanks for the warning!
