sekt

When the Treaty of Versailles prohibited all European countries but France from using the term Champagne for sparkling wines, Germany replaced it with “Sekt”.

In Germany, the sweetness of Sekt wines follows a strict rating system:

Sweetness Rating Grams residual sugar per litre
Extra Herb (Brut) 0 – 6
Herb (Brut) 0 – 15
Extra Trocken (Extra Dry) 12 – 20
Trocken (Dry) 17 – 35
Halbtrocken (Demi Sec) 33 – 50
Süss, Drux, Doux (Sweet) 50+
