capsule

The capsule is the protective cover placed over the top of a bottle of wine. Traditionally made of a mixture of tin and lead, this is slowly giving way to more modern materials (i.e., aluminum, plastic, etc.). The purpose of the capsule is to cover the cork and keep outside influences (especially moisture) from causing the cork to become defective.
