Topic: Champagne/Sparkling Wine / Veuve Cliquot lineup. Got a chance to taste through their lineup yesterday Fast so no detailed notes Veuve Cliquot Rose – light salmon in color, fresh fruit nose, easy drinking but at these prices….I’d slow down just a bit. Veuve Cliquot Rose Vintage 2004 – much more mineral driven than the NV, about 10g/l dosage but it did come off quite dry, delicous, and despite all the density of flavours, the core of a green apple is there. Veuve Cliquot Vintage 2004 – much more structured and (now not rose) mineral driven, good energy/verviness, acidic, good bit on the palate. Veuve Cliquote La Grande Dame – ahhh, an old friend, something I’ve been lucky to taste many times over and this one was probably better than all the other US ones that I’e tried through the years, still reasonably young with a ton of density. Lovely toasted Briooche, nuts, and green apple Veuve Cliquot La Grande Dame Rose – Wow, what a trememdous step up from the vintage, this is all Grande Cru and it is drinkling well, very fresh and young still and fruit is now more towards black berry side. Veuve Clicquot 1995 Magnum – this thing is FRESH, fresher than the 98, lots of structre, acidity, beauty of a balance, this was the wine of the night fo sure. Veuve Cliquot Rose La Grande Dame 1998 |

Topic: Best Buys/Steal Deals / Wine Room Wall units They all seem to be around the same price for the usual suspects. I’d just order from Wineenthusiast myself or from a local distributor. If you are in CA, they also sell then in K&L and other larger wine stores. |

Topic: Rants & Raves / Bummer I thought all they had to do was apply for a no charge license and they could ship freely into NH. That was info I had from 6 – 7 years ago. Apparently something has changed in the Live Free or Die state. |

Topic: Rants & Raves / Bummer Easton/Terre Rouge has advised they are no longer shipping to New Hampshire because of costs imposed by the state. Tobin James charges me another $12.40 (above S&H) to cover these charges. |

Topic: Australia/New Zealand/South Africa / '08 Pillar Box Red 2008 Henry’s Drive, Pillar Box Red, Padthaway Australia ($9.99): Alcohol level: 14.5%/ This is a rustic blend of Shiraz 66%, Cabernet Sauvignon 25%, and Merlot 9%. It was chock full of sediment. First I exchanged it between bottle and decanter a few times, washing out each vessel each time. Then I ran it through a decanter strainer. It still tasted a little too rustic. So I ran it through a 2 cup unbleached coffee filter. That did the trick; and I will start there with the second bottle in the cellar. It turned out to be the perfect matched for broiled kielbasa with mustard and horseradish; along with some rustic succotash. Yum, yum for a rustic supper! It came with a screwtop. |

I usually get up about 5 am, and if I see spam I delete it so it’s gone by the time the Weener gets his old bones out of the sack. This morning I said to myself – let someone else do it this time. |

Topic: Rants & Raves / Happy Mothers' Day to all the moms..... (burp) Mercy! And haven’t even had the crepes yet! The vino was supremo with only two hours of air time. She insisted on sides of oven-roasted spuds and broccoli; steaks came out wunderbar! Reminded us of our first year of marriage, in Germany…. idyllic, never to be forgotten. |

Topic: Rants & Raves / Happy Mothers' Day to all the moms..... Here, she’s been napping while I drain the escargot, whip up the crepes suzzette, air the wine (‘01 Ch. Talbot) and prepare to grill the filet mignons over oak. She didn’t want Champagne, so will return that to the cellar. Best to all. |

Topic: Bordeaux / 1970 Chateau Latour One of the best from the 70 vintage. Don’t turn down a chance to drink the 71. This was a super wine from a really poor vintage. Bought out Argonaut in Denvers stock at the major price of 16.99 per as all of the 71s’ were painted with the same brush. WW |

Topic: Pinot Noir/Red Burgundy / 2007 De Loach Pinot Noir Masút Vineyard Quite a big pinot noir with intense red fruit and raspberry flavors. Earthy notes with an attractive bitter edge and a touch of oak round out the flavor profile. Nice wine but not for delicate food. 15% Alc/vol. $22 Drew |

Topic: Rose/Blush/All Pink Wines / '10 La Vielle Ferme Recolte 2010 La Vielle Ferme Recolte Rose’, AOC Ventoux. Made with Grenache and Cinsault from the slopes of Mont Ventoux. Have not purchased a lot of wine from this maker, thinking of them as sort of French Gallo. However Dan Berger recommended it, so we thought we’d give it shot. It turned to be a very refreshing wine that goes good with food and could also work solo. It is not completely dry, but neither is it too sweet. We matched it with Coho salmon steaks grilled over charcoal and pecan chips, napped with Hollandaise to which we had added some Fine Herbs; rice pilaf, and green peas. Excellent Friday night meal. |

Topic: Cabernet Sauvignon / 1985 Dominus I’ve not had any older Dominus bottles but based on reputation, this bottle must have been a bit damaged. It was a bit flabby and lacked life. The wine drank okay but very little to go back to. Color was deep adn fine for the age but just lacked life and interest. Will look for first opportunity to retest this vintage but this bottle certainly did ntt perform well. |

Topic: Cabernet Sauvignon / 1997 Titus Napa I know there’s been many knocks for the last 3-5 years on this vintage. Well ole “leather-tongue” weener jes done unnerstan what the blue blazes what the problem be. This was drinking, IMHO, like a delicious mature Napa cab should. Can’t all be blamed on provenence. I’ve probably had over 200 97s’ in the past 3-4 years and not only did them dudes drink killer I was doing the buyers remorse thingie on darned near ebber one. WW |
