Saale / Unstrut

Saale/Unstrut is the most northern of Germany's wine growing regions. This small area is known as having been the first area in Germany to have planted American rootstock (1887) to combat the spread of Phylloxera. The vineyards of this area are found on the hills near the town of Freyburg and near the start of the warm Saale River valley. Grapes grown here include Müller-Thurgau, Silvaner and Weissburgunder (Pinot Blanc). The wines tend to be soft, medium-bodied and dry.
