Ahr

This is one of Germany's smallest wine growing regions. Located along the Ahr River near where it empties into the Rhine River south of Bonn, the area is known for the velvety red and racy white wines it produces. The volcanic soil of the steep hillside vineyards mostly produce red grapes - Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) and Portugieser. Riesling and Müller-Thurgau are the major white grape varietals. Most of the wine produced in this area is locally consumed.
